I don't know about you, but I tend to get our family taxes filed swiftly and promptly. Almost as soon as our W-2's hit the door. It is probably because we tend to get a refund, at least the last few years we have...

Until last year I always filed my hand printed forms and waited for my refund to hit the door, so I could get it deposited. I never filed electronically, because I am not going to pay someone to file a return for me and it seemed that I never qualified to submit an electronic form, we always made about $1000 or $2000 more than the listed limit.

I hit upon this site last year...TAXACT...it was free, easy, concise, reviewed my most basic questions and we got our electronically deposited refund, so fast...

I don't receive any payback or fees for this endorsement, I just highly recommend that you check it out and see if it might be for you or your family!

New Year's Resolutions...

My DH asked the question during the Sunday School class this past Sunday. What do you have for a New Year's Resolution?

The rest of the class didn't hesitate and I was left with nothing to say...

I guess I have been too busy with all of the things that needed to get done for the holidays to think about the end of the year.

I typically do not do too much for New Year's never have. The kids always seem to get into the spirit of the event, but it is too taxing for me to even think about staying up that late...

I like to have written out long and short term goals and find that I can accomplish quite abit if I have the goals written down or even spend some time thinking about what is a priority for me.

I do know that a priority for me is to get my haircut. I have not cut my hair since before my littlest DS was born. I have a mass of hair and never like to do anything with it, so it typically is pulled back and up. I was hoping to get a haircut squeezed in before the holidays, but just couldn't find the time...

So I resolve to get my hair cut!

There, I have one goal at least verbalized, now I will have to contemplate additional goals and get them written down.

I know of one major goal that I should have and have family members begging me to do...but haven't been able to commit to placing that as a priority for me...I guess I know how hard it will be...so please pray for me and having the resolve to finally establish a much needed personal priority, yet unnamed and written down....

Wow, we are having a wonderful Christmas and Holiday season for 2008! I hope you are also.

The best thing about the season is being able to see and spend some really nice time with your family and loved ones. I and my family have been fortunate to have been able to drive/visit/host several family members over the Thanksgiving/Christmas time.

Next we are on to some New Year festivities in the Dallas area with my brother-in-law and their family, plus squeezing in some more visiting time in with our oldest daughter and her husband and our two older children in the Dallas area.

Talk about a whirlwind.

Our teenage son has been squeezing in some quality time with saxophone practice here and there, plus enjoying so much quality time with his older siblings, who we get to see too little of during the year.

Our littlest is getting into the swing of things with the gifts. He had no interest in actually opening the presents, just set them out for him to play with and explore. I don't think that there was one gift that he didn't actually love. He really got into playing with his new Learning Bus, firetruck and his learning pad.

One of our traditions at our house is to decorate Christmas cookies, my teenage son has loved this activity over the years and we were really looking forward to starting the tradition with my littlest. He participated by standing on the stepstool and eating cookies, couldn't get him to sprinkle cookies or even decorate cookies, but he did stand there quietly eating away. My two younger sons are so....different in their interests.

My littlest did have a meltdown during the experience, he got some frosting on his finger and got very upset until we could get it cleaned off.

Now, I am talking about the kid who on Christmas Day jumped into the dog's water dish with his best clothes on then proceeded to play and roll around in the dirt and eat mud and dirt pies!!! He only had a meltdown when he got cookie frosting on his finger!!! Gotta love it...

Angel Food Ministry

My family and I are blessed to be able to participate in the Angel Food Ministries through our local church. We as a family have participated by purchasing some of the meals to help with our food budget and needs over the past year and now we get to have a local site and also serve other people who participate.

It is a really good program. Our church had over 47 families served last month with over 100 boxes being distributed. This month we will be handing out some more items on this coming Saturday!

The day starts awful early for my DH who willingly gets up at 4:30am and bundles up with longjohns etc. to make an over 1 1/2 hour drive to the nearest large city to pick up the churches order, load the items and also help load up the over 12 churches who are also picking up and then heading back to our church and unloading everything for us to sort and deliver.

The ministry takes alot of effort by several people and we had an abundant showing up of willing servers. It is anticipated that our ministry even in our town of only 2500 will grow to be about 1000 boxes ordered each month!!! Wow...

Reuse Thrifty Tip

The Thrifty Mama has a really neat posting that I just had to share...

Maybe I am the only person that has a ton of these type of hangers just hanging around in my closet...but this idea really hit home. I have hated to throw them away because they are so sturdy, but I don't really have that many skirts or other items to hang up in my closet, I typically fold as many items as I can.

But, I do have a ton of items that I could use a clip for in my pantry. So I tried this suggestion and it really works!!! So I am going to be destroying most of my free hangers and making lots of clips to have around for a much needed occasion.

One other suggestion, I don't hang my laundry out to dry but I think this idea would work well to hang out items on a clothesline as well.

What do you think?

How To Save During The Holidays?

Since my DH and I started Conquering Debt God's Way
last year right before Christmas we were presented with the unique challenge of paying our full 10% tithe from our gross salaries and still survive during the Christmas season...

I know that is probably not the term that one would want to use to describe the holiday season, but sometimes that is what it feels like so...I was thoughtful and a little anxious about how this was going to be pulled off.

I have to tell you that little surprises and ideas just seemed to come out of nowhere sometimes, hmmmm. One of the biggest suggestions that I read about that helped us out immensely at that time was the idea of redeeming your frequent flyer miles.

A few years back my family was able to travel to Europe roundtrip and my teenage son and I were also priviledged to be able to travel to Japan roundtrip. I know it was unique, but I had signed up for frequent flyer miles through American Airlines and we flew on this airline for both of our trips.

I didn't think much about the points, but they were just sitting out there, then I read a tip in a frugal website about redeeming your frequent flyer miles through points.com

To my amazement, it really added up!!! We were able to get about $300 worth of giftcards with no hassle or fees. They arrived just in time for Christmas gift giving.

This might be a little late for some people to use this Christmas season, but birthdays and special gift giving needs arrive throughout the year.

Or, how about just treating yourself to something that you might use more than frequent flyer miles?

We were able to get gift certificates to Red Lobster, Nike, Steak and Ale, Target and others, the selection was vast. Check it out and see...

My Teenage Son Has Been Selected As A High School Aerospace Scholar!!!

I had mentioned in a previous posting about my teenage DS agreeing to apply for the High School Aerospace Program.

He received an email today and was congratulated on being nominated by his state legislature for a spot in the program!!!

He is kinda' shocked and feeling overwhelmed when I reminded him that he will need to complete 10 lessons due every two weeks starting in January.

His nomination to participate in the summer onsite program at NASA in Houston will be based on his performance and scores received on the projects that will be due. I hope the projects interest him and he is motivated to complete them.

He loves Science and one of the reasons I thought this might interest him is the advanced challenges that he might be facing with the modules and lessons. He is not always challenged in his current High School academic program and that frustrates him.

He has been struggling lately with trying to see what type of programs in college might interest him. He didn't receive the type of score that he would have liked on his PSAT exam...But the good thing is that it has motivated him to ask to be assigned to work his last period of the day in the library where they have the Kaplan review program for the SAT test. He wants to improve his knowledge and test taking skills to be placed higher in their ranking system.

So he has alot more challenges to face, but I am thrilled that he is being offered this unique learning experience!

Busy, Busy, busy....

My family and I have had a very jam packed filled couple of weeks. We had several events that we celebrated over the weekend, a very nice fellowship at our home with our Sunday School class members, Lions Club member dinner and prep for their Santa Claus activity at the local Primary and Elementary school, and finally our church Christmas Cantata and our special candlelight service where we have our Lottie Moon offerings presented, followed by our Birthday Party for Jesus celebration. Whew, are we tired!!!

This in addition to my husband still working on our kitchen remodeling.

Holiday Shopping On A Budget

I read a wonderful post this morning from Jane4girls about how to shop during the holidays on a budget and one of her points stuck in my head. Check out her posting for yourself...

My DH and I were able to spend a great evening out together, first a winter dinner at a local restaurant with the Bovina Lions Club and then a really romantic stroll with my DH through the home improvement aisles of Lowes...(yes, we have been married over 19 years and I really do think it is romantic!!!).

Then I spied a huge banner over the gift cards at the front of the store. Receive $10 gift certificate when you purchase over $100 in gift cards. Hmmmm....

So we had just returned over $300 in the wrong style of door knobs for the house and my DH had over $140 of items in the cart, just a couple of quick questions to the clerk and my DH agreed to 'try' my giftcard purchase suggestion.

As Jane said, if you are going to be purchasing items anyway at a store with an offer on their giftcards, then just purchase the giftcard beforehand and use it for your purchase.

So I had hubby by a giftcard for $140 and then turned around and used it for our purchase of over $156 in Lowes items. Pretty good, from the details on the receipt I could then just go home and register online in order to receive my giftcard good for $10 off of a future $10 or greater purchase at Lowes. Works for me...

Keep an eye out for similar deals at your local stores. From what I read at Lowe's website, I am eligible to do this up to two additional times for a total of $30 in giftcards, we'll have to see what other major purchase needs come our way...

Clementines

I am on the lookout for a new holiday favorite of my families. Have you seen them in your local store yet?

Sweet clementines! We got hooked a few years back when we were able to travel to Italy for a really special Christmas celebration with my DH aunt and cousins.

Italy is quite unique in their breakfast fare, they will eat cookies with Nutella and capuccino and not much else. I think our dear relatives were feeling sorry for us when we were still hungry and offered up some clementines.

We had never had any before and fell in love, small, sweet and so good to eat!!!

Italy was a joy to experience during the holidays for fresh citrus fruits. The lemons were huge and we couldn't get enough of the clementines. So now we are always on the lookout in our local store for a box or good stash to grab during the Christmas season.

Just wanted to get a note off to everyone to let you know that my DS was successful with this tryouts for All Region. After a long and tiring day, he arrived home about 11pm and was very happy to announce that he will advance to All Area tryouts in January.

He received a ranking as second chair of the symphonic band, behind another player from Bushland HS whom he has competed against several times over the years. This is the first time that this player has scored a high level than my son, but we heard from the judges that it was a split for first between the two judges on their ranking. Apparently two were for my son placing 1st and two were for the other boy placing first. But honestly, my son wasn't upset at all. I think in fact, it takes some pressure off of him. Last year, he felt like he was going to pass out when it came time to perform in front of the audience at All Region and he looked like he was going to as well, in first chair he has to sit on the edge near the audience. So, he is just thrilled to make it to All Area for another chance at All State.

My DH and I knew our son was extremely nervous Sunday night, he was beside himself with nerves. So what is a parent to do, we sat him down and affirmed him and prayed with him. I also was able to affirm him on Monday before he left when he came home for lunch.

He said it was the weirdest thing...He wasn't nervous at all and felt very warm and calm. He had prayed, taken a deep breath and remembered our words about how he was to demonstrate his gifts and talents that he has received and to let the Lord handle the rest. It took the pressure off of him.

He also remembered that this event is suppose to be something that he is to enjoy and have a good experience with, so that helps keep things in perspective. So many kids feel so much pressure during these events. He is responsible for practicing, giving it his all for his performance but the results are not left up to him. As far as we were concerned he had already demonstrated his excellence.

But watch out young man from Bushland. Our son is fired up for besting you at All Area and making it to All State... I think the ranking as second might have given him more of an incentive to continue to practice aggressively leading up to the All Area tryouts. The key is keeping up an aggressive practice schedule during the holiday season. Something that is very hard to do for most kids and he has struggled with as well in the past two years. We have heard from the band directors that the kids who are aggressive with their practicing over the holidays are the ones who get the rankings to go to All State. Realistically, at All Area he will be competing against 12 other kids for being ranked in the top two to be able to advance. So a pretty aggressive tryout ahead. Some boys demonstrate their aggressiveness in sports events, our son is very aggressive in his academic and playing skills...I don't think most of the people at his school see this side of him.

A little known fact, our son refuses to get any of the patches sewn onto his HS letter jacket because he wants to plan where his patches will go based on the placement around an All State band patch, which apparently is huge and covers most of the back of a letter jacket. Hmmmm......

Apparently, the young man from Bushland might have received some angry hostile looks from the other kids at my son's school. Our sons peers did not like the fact that he was bested in his ranking and were angry, while our son, didn't even have an issue with his placement. He felt bad about what the other young man might have received from his peers.

In addition he heard from the judges that he and the player from Bushland were so tight in their skills, but the other kids that tried out on Alto Sax were no where near their skill of playing. This other young man is a son of a Band Director and I am sure that he has some pressure placed upon him to do his best. I think it is great for my son to be challenged and I hope this year he might be able to get to know this young man a little bit more. They have competed against each other since 8th grade and my DS always sees him at band camp as well as other competitions.

Family Christmas Traditions

My dear youngest daughter and I had a discussion recently about family Christmas traditions. Maybe you are like me and you have never really thought much about them, or what you might say that they are...

I found this great posting offering up some wonderful new traditions that someone might consider adopting to their family traditions from Faithful Provisions.

I think I need to review and pray about some of these...

I asked my DH this question, "what are our family Christmas traditions and he didn't hesitate to say that we try to put a priority on seeing our extended families during the holidays". That can make for some very hectic holiday travel and times, in fact that is the predominant memory for some of our family...

It was more than a little telling to us when we didn't travel over the holidays a few years back and our then youngest son who was about 10 said it was the best Christmas he could ever remember, just laid back and quiet and not hectic!

So we have decided to pray about this topic and see what we might need to do to adjust our Christmas celebrations to make them more significant and memorable for our entire family.

We did establish the following as our family priorities for the Christmas season last year and it helps keep some of the decisions that you are faced with making during this time in perspective:

1) Our Faith in Jesus Christ
2) Sharing Fellowship with Family and Friends
3) Good Food and Fun

All Region Tryouts

My teenage DS is in the final stages of preparing for his very important All Region Band tryouts. He has made the symphonic band the past two years and was able to achieve 1st chair last year. His tryouts are scheduled for next Monday the 8th, so I would appreciate your prayers for his musical talent and gifts to show through during this tryout!!!

He is practicing everyday and was busy for about 2 hours yesterday after school and is busy at school playing during his band class.

The top three performers in alto sax at the all region tryouts also automatically advance to the all area tryouts which will be held in Abilene this year on January 10th, 2009.

He hasn't realized it yet, but the all area has been realigned, so he will be competing in a different mix of kids than he has seen over the past two years, don't think I will tell him that, it might add in another level of stress.

Christmas Can Be Frustrating If You Are A Little Guy!!!

I think this picture sums up some of his feelings. Maybe it is because my littlest son is a stay at home guy, but it has been awful frustrating around the house the last few days for him!!!

As we have been super organized and have gotten most of the Christmas presents and decorations completed and out, it has only added to the frustration being experienced by our littlest.

There are so many no, no's around, that I will have to take the time to make sure he has some yes, yes's in there. He is not interested in playing with the items that are out that he is allowed to play with, the only interesting things around are the fragile/delicate things.

I caught him trying to open a present yesterday and every ornament on the tree is just calling out his name...

Pray for my littlest...because there are even more things out and about in our home for him to be frustrated with...

Junior Student Of The Month

I have forgotten to mention that my DS recently was honored at his school as the Junior Student of the Month for November!!!

This is what was written in his recognition:

He takes responsibility in the classroom and earns excellent grades. He is very respectful and is a talented member of the Chieftain Band. He is always focused in the classroom.

He is such a joy to have as a son, it's nice to see him being recognized by others as well.

Life Can Be Scarey!

Okay the first one to comment and let me know if scarey is spelled correctly gets a big internet hug!!!

No, really, it is kinda' scarey around my house. I have over 16 packages wrapped and stashed. I was reviewing my stocking stuffer stash and it is pretty well complete. I have only probably three more gifts to purchase and then one more major grocery run before the holidays...

If you are family or friends and know me, you are probably getting chills up and down your spine, it is pretty scarey isn't it. I have never in my life been this far along and organized for the holidays.

I am typically the person in the back bedroom the night before the big day, doing a mad scramble for wrapping. Can I hear an AMEN!!!

So join with me in realizing the historical significance of this moment!!!

My DH says it is so nice around here and he loves it...Who does he think he is kidding, does he think in a million years that this will ever happen again.

How Did You Do On Black Friday?!?

Thanks to my wonderful family, I had a really good day of shopping. First my family watched over my littlest son (thanks mom and dad!) and let me take my time. I had a detailed list and did not defer at all from my master list. That in itself was a major accomplishment for me.

I hit over 7 different stores, starting at 4AM and finished up about 10AM. I then headed back out that early evening and headed back about 3 1/2 hours later after shopping at WalMart and reviewing and picking up dry product item I could with my coupons. It takes so much time to read, review and decide on buying something. It was a really good shopping trip and I was able to fit it all in the car without having to leave a family member behind.

Then I hit up the local WalMart before we arrived back home for my frozen and dairy products.

My new pantry was stocked to the core!!! Awesome!!!

Then the greatest thing of all. We went to church the next day and heard about a family with three kids in town, whose father has brain cancer, he can't work, the mom is doing everything she can to bring in some income and keep them afloat and they can't even afford any meds for the father. My DH says that their pantry was absolutely empty and there was hardly anything in the fridge. You know you don't even stop to ask if they are in this country legally or illegally, they are in need and we have so much. God must have put that family in Friona for some reason and we hope to have more opportunities to bless that family as we can. Puts it in perspective doesn't it...

Talk about a humbling awakening. Nothing else to do, but load up the Explorer once again with about 100 pounds of our abundant overflow and bless another family with what I was able to be blessed with in my major shopping trips. Sometimes it is hard to let go of something that you take pride in, my husband and I have desired to fill our pantry and cabinets to overflowing, but you know we have so much more ability to restock our pantry easily than the next family. It also lets me remember that my ability to score such incredible deals and purchases is not because of my efforts, but only because of and through the blessings I have received from the Lord.

Good afternoon!!! Doesn't that description sound nice!!!

This is a picture of our newly ordered laminate for our kitchen counters. Check out the rest of my posting for more details.

Well we had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. The best thing about going to see someone for Thanksgiving is that you typically don't have leftover turkey concoctions for the next few weeks. I did end up with some leftovers, courtesy of mom. Thanks Mom!!! I do love her dressing and sweet potato casserole. I haven't even told my husband about the sweet potato leftovers, he loves them and I am not so sure I want to share.

My youngest daughter has posted some wonderful family photos, thank you for taking the time to photograph the festivities and post them for all to see.

My oldest son posted some good photos as well. We had a wonderful extended visit with our son for most of the holiday week. He helped us out immensely in our kitchen remodeling by scrapping up the old lineoleum flooring. It was a lifesaver.

We custom ordered our laminate on our anniversary. You can tell when you have been married for awhile, when you are excited to order laminate for your anniversary gift!!! It has already arrived to the store, so my exhausted DH will be going to pick it up after work and also some wood for building some new cabinet doors and also the wood for the counters.

This is an overwhelming project, but he is an excellent builder, so we are excited.

He is under a time crunch since we are going to be hosting several family members for Christmas so he was up to over 11pm knocking out cabinets and wall sections. We have hit our first major remodeling glitch. He has discovered a plumbing vent in the wall behind our sink. We were aiming to open up this entire area to the greatroom. I don't know if he will build a faux column around it or will be moving the venting. I am voting for a faux column to cover it up, but he is thinking about it. He is typically a perfectionist so he might try moving it, we'll wait to see what he thinks.

I'll try to get some photos posted in the next few days.

It's Almost That Time....

Can you feel the excitement in the air?!? I am not talking about the turkey and trimmings for Thanksgiving....

It's almost time for Black Friday!!!

If you have never experienced this unique phenomenon it is truly something that everyone should be exposed to at least once in their lifetime.

I remember several times that my mother and I have gotten up at around 4:30 to 5:00am just to go to a store and stand in line...to nab the tremendous sale items. The unique thing is that we are never alone. Usually there are hundreds of others sharing the bitterly cold moment with us.

PROGRESSIVE AUTO INSURANCE

I don't think I have ever blogged about this...My DH and I experienced extreme savings on our car insurance during the first part of 2008. We were shocked to receive notice about an extreme increase in our car insurance rates, over 10% more, when we hadn't had any claims or tickets added.

So I took to the internet and did some research and review. I received many online quotes on rates and was about to sign up with a third party for a significant savings on Progressive auto insurance. But wait...why am I going through another individual? Can't I sign up directly with Progressive???

I did a direct search for Progressive and ended up with even more savings by going through their website. All in all, it sure was worth it...We saved over 33% on our insurance premiums. You also receive even more savings by paying it all in one lump sum. So even for frugal me, it was worth it to tap into savings to pay it all in one lump sum, it averaged out to one less payment in the end.

Then the ultimate test, we had a major hailstorm this past summer and my Explorer was beatened to a bluddy pulp. Less than two months after we initiated our policy with Progressive, they worked so diligently and timely for us. My husband was thrilled that we could take it to the Ford body shop and was approved for all repairs with no questions asked...

Then, I expected the big blow to our account, it was time to renew our policy and I grimaced to think about what they would increase our policy too...Drum roll please....NO INCREASE!!!!

That's right, absolutely no increase. I guess I should sign up to be a sales rep for Progressive. I am kidding, I am not receiving any financial benefit by doing this post, just want to tell you about how this has benefited my family personally. Check it out yourself, compare and see....

A Life That Is Truly Blessed

It is not a life of works, but your walk with Jesus will encourage you to think about and serve your fellow man. During this holiday season, my family and I are blessed to be able to participate in several areas of ministry through our local church and community.

Angel Food Ministries
Our church has decided to start a local ministry in our community. My family has participated in this ministry for the past year, it has allowed us to stretch our family budget even further in order for us to contribute more to ministries in our church and community. We are excited to be able to serve others in our community through this ministry. It is not always easy, my husband will be leaving at 4:30am tomorrow to drive over 1 1/2 hours one way to pick up the food boxes and then the rest of the family will arrive at the church at 8:00am to help organize and assist with distribution of boxes, but we are looking to bless others and minister to their needs, both physical and spiritual.

Operation Christmas Child
Our family is blessed to be able to supply two to four boxes each year and look forward to the gifts that we are able to provide. We participate as a family in praying for the recipients of each box, that this small gift might help them to establish a relationship with Jesus.

Lottie Moon Offering for World Missionaries

This is a special time in our church and for our family. Our church has a birthday party for Jesus each year and during this special service. We have a empty manger at the front of the church where as a family we present our offering for the Lottie Moon Ministry. We save for this throughout the year and make sure that this offering is our most significant gift of the year in order that the work of our Lord will be multiplied abundantly throughout the world.

We as a family are looking forward to many more opportunities to minister, witness and evangelize to the world.

We pray that the ministries that your family chooses to participate in are a blessing to the Lord.

Truly there are so many opportunites for each of us, if we would just open our eyes and see. It is not only in money, but using your time, talents, etc.

The Lord wants us to serve wholeheartedly!!!

I have not been that regular about posting this week. I cooked the Wednesday evening meal last week for our church meal and fed about 80 people Macaroni AlForno, salad, Italian garlic bread and fresh sugar cookies. Yum, yum...

I have also been watching another girl all week for the parents plus the other young girl that I routinely watch on Fridays and Mondays, so I have been a little busy. I also cooked the Lions Club meal today, baked pork chops, mashed potatoes, pork gravy, peas and carrots, salad and a double layer german chocolate sheet cake, yum, yum...

In addition, I am working to get the enchilada dinner organized for our band booster fundraiser. It is happening on the 23rd and we routinely feed 350, we have a goal of feeding 400 this year, so a little hectic lately for me. But that will probably be my routine for the next couple of months, hectic...

Fall Afternoon Of Fun

While dad was remodeling in the kitchen, littlest and I spent alot of time outside enjoying the beautiful Fall weather. He mastered tossing of the mulch, stuffing of the knothole, sliding down the slide face first and eating of bark. He favorite word this afternoon, was 'whee' as he threw around leaves, dirt, etc. He had a ball and we were outside for 1 1/2 hours!!! It truly was perfect, wish you could have been there, check out some more really cute photos from our adventure.

Kitchen Remodeling

It's amazing what one can accomplish under extreme pressure!!!

My DH is thoroughly remodeling our home. We purchased a ranch style tract home circa 1960's which needed alot of work done to it. As we said, it has good bones and the original owner really put quality products in the home, so we have a pretty good foundation to work with. Unfortunately, there was an owner in the late 1990's who probably watched one too many home remodeling shows and had no skills, so there is alot of painting projects that were done in a very poor manner. The saddest part is that they spent quite abit of money on a kitchen remodel project that was done at a very poor quality level and was incomplete. Whoever did the project for them didn't finish with the wallpapering, finishing out the wood trim around the baseboards, etc. The greatest frustration is that they put in new tile counters that didn't hold up to any intense use, the mortar was a very cheap and poor quality and would just powder up, so there are loose, broken, dislodged tiles all over the place. So a little frustrating for us.

What can I say, we got the house at a really good price. The house couldn't sell in a town where houses were being snatched up right and left at the time. So that says a little about the condition of the property. My DH is a remodeling expert, or is becoming one over all of the years of my and his mother's honey do's. We were planning to complete the kitchen remodel as the last room on our list, since it would be the most expensive, but he started tackling the project last week. This is going to be a pretty major remodel when it is all said and done, at least for us. He is tearing out my oversize pantry that was too awkward. The cabinets were over 2 1/2 feet deep, I called it the great abyss, things would get lost for years in there. He is building me a larger but not as deep pantry off to the side wall, I am thrilled, it will be so much more functional. That will allow us to then tear out the current pantry, a cabinet and shelves around the sink area thereby opening up the kitchen to look out over our greatroom, therefore making it a more traditional great room. We then will have a long counter by our sink and he will have about a six foot bar area looking out to the greatroom, which will be excellent for so many things!!!

Can you tell that I am thrilled?

The timecrunch is that the holidays are upon us and we hope to be hosting several family members during the Xmas season. So a little bit of pressure to my husband's remodeling!!!

It is exciting and I am thrilled that my DH has the skills, he really does do excellent work when it is all said and done. We will have new texturing, new repaint of the cabinets, new trim on top of the cabinets, new light fixture, new laminate counters, new lineoleum floors, etc.

A newly refurbished kitchen is my Xmas present, Birthday present, Anniversary present, etc!!! I couldn't have asked for anything better!!!

True Meaning of Christmas

Just a week before Christmas I had a visitor. This is how it happened. I just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing to go to bed, when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I opened the door to the front room and to my surprise, Santa himself stepped out next to the fireplace.

"What are you doing?" I started to ask. The words choked up in my throat and I saw he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone. Gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know. He then answered me with a simple statement . . .

"TEACH THE CHILDREN!" I was puzzled. What did he mean? He anticipated my question and with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the tree. As I stood bewildered, Santa said, "Teach the children!

Teach them the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that now-a-days Christmas has forgotten. "Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a FIR TREE and placed it before the mantle. "Teach the children that the pure green color of the stately fir tree remains green all year round, depicting the everlasting hope of mankind, all the needles point heavenward, making it a symbol of man's thoughts turning toward heaven."

He again reached into his bag and pulled out a brilliant STAR. "Teach the children that the star was the heavenly sign of promises long ago. God promised a Savior for the world, and the star was the sign of fulfillment of His promise."

He then reached into his bag and pulled out a CANDLE. "Teach the children that the candle symbolizes that Christ is the light of the world, and when we see this great light we are reminded of He who displaces the darkness."

Once again he reached into his bag and removed a WREATH and placed it on the tree. "Teach the children that the wreath symbolizes the real nature of love. Real love never ceases. Love is one continuous round of affection."

He then pulled from his bag an ORNAMENT of himself. "Teach the children that I, Santa Claus, symbolize the generosity and good will we feel during the month of December."

He then brought out a HOLLY LEAF. "Teach the children that the holly plant represents immortality. It represents the crown of thorns worn by our Savior. The red holly berries represent the blood shed by Him.

Next he pulled from his bag a GIFT and said, "Teach the children that God so loved the world that he gave his begotten son." Thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift.

Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a CANDY CANE and hung it on the tree. "Teach the children that the candy cane represents the shepherds' crook. The crook on the staff helps to bring back strayed sheep to the flock. The candy cane is the symbol that we are our brother's keeper."

He reached in again and pulled out an ANGEL. "Teach the children that it was the angels that heralded in the glorious news of the Savior's birth. The angels sang Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace and good will toward men."

Suddenly I heard a soft twinkling sound, and from his bag he pulled out a BELL,. "Teach the children that as the lost sheep are found by the sound of the bell, it should ring mankind to the fold. The bell symbolizes guidance and return.

Santa looked back and was pleased. He looked back at me and I saw that the twinkle was back in his eyes. He said, "Remember, teach the children the true meaning of Christmas and do not put me in the center, for I am but a humble servant of the One that is, and I bow down to worship him, our LORD, our GOD."

Trick or Treat 2008

Well the season for Trick or Treating sure came up really fast this year. This was our first year to go out and about with our littlest. We were able to go to the local 'Trunk or Treat' event at a local church. My DH and I have never participated, so we were a little shocked to see a line of over 200 kids at least to go through the trunk or treat, they probably had over 400 kids when it was all said and done. The church backs up about 15 cars in their parking lot and they hand out candy to the little kids, good idea and alot safer if you don't know which houses to go to, plus it was a really good opportunity to visit with parents and see alot of really neat costumes.

Needless to say our littlest was a little overwhelmed by it all!!! But he got the hang of it pretty fast. Also, he has never eaten candy before, so this was a night for alot of firsts.... Amazingly, he zeroed in on the lollipops in his goodie bag and by the time we left he had eaten over 3 lollipops!!! Sugar on a stick!!! I think we might have created a new candy monster...

He went as a race car driver, I think he was really cute and he didn't fuss over wearing any part of it and kept the hat on, once he saw all of the kids dressed up. Plus he loved to swing and run around with his pumpkin candy holder. Then we went back home and he helped dad hand out candy. Sorry I don't have any photos, but momma had to go the HS football game and work the concession stand as a band booster. From what I hear, he had a ball running to give out candy, he was running to meet the kids when they got to our driveway regardless of how scarey some of their costumes were and was handing out hugs as well as candy and had a ball waving to everyone as they left. He is 'Mr. Social'.

His usual bedtime is about 9:00pm and that night my DH was lucky to get him in bed by 10:30 and apparently he didn't put up a fight at all, he must have been exhausted. So I think he got into the swing of things and probably can't wait until next year!!!

Trick or Treat 2008

My Littlest, Another Day, Another Word!!!

I have not written about this until now, but I have been a little bit intense about my littlest DS not really embracing speaking. He is now 27 months old and still is very much into his own language.

I guess I am feeling a little like it might be a reflection of something that I have done wrong or not done enough of, I am taking it personally.

My DH says not to worry, but I have still been worried...

Our littlest suffers from allergies, and I have learned not to take him to the doctor for routine antibiotics and have learned to work through the occasional three day period of ear inflammation, sore throat, drippy nose, etc.

You see when my teenage DS was little he suffered with allergies also. There were numerous nights when he was having earaches and his sister would place him on her chest and sleep with him in the recliner, she couldn't bear to hear him cry because the pressure on his eardrums was hurting him. I routinely had him on antibiotics, talked with doctors on whether or not he needed tubes in his ears, etc. An ENT surgeon that I worked with, even though he routinely was putting tubes in kids ears everyday, so he would never put his own child through the procedure, too much risk with anesthesia. Plus all of the teachings about our children developing into antibiotic resistant individuals because of our inappropriate and misuse of routine antibiotics when they are of no benefit to the healing process, especially with allergies and ear infections.

So some of the reasoning behind our decisions against antibiotics and surgical intervention, but sometimes you wonder if you might have a child with a hearing loss.

Our teenage DS lived through the experiences, had no speech impediment and only shows minor hearing damage from the first three years of his allergy struggles.

So I have some history with being fearful re: possible hearing loss.

With our littlest, he said the obligatory mama, dada at the right stages and then stopped after about one week, really haven't heard it since. He developed his own language at about 11 months old and hasn't demonstrated too much interest in acquiring any of our language. So when you might be expecting him to say cup, cow, ear, no, yes, etc. He doesn't... But, it is weird, he has said multi-word statments out of the blue, here and there...i.e. what are you doing?, etc. He just is not into single word statments.

So my intensity has gotten a little worse over the past few weeks. I have been reading and researching the subject quite abit. Do I need to get him into an Early Childhood Intervention Program, do we need to get his hearing tested, etc?

My DH has remained calm throughout my ramblings and said that there is nothing wrong with our littlest, he doesn't have a hearing loss, chooses not to speak when prompted and not to worry!

Well, it seems that within the last week, when my intesity for worry has increased, now all of a sudden his latest statement is 'what's that?' and making 'duhduhduh' and 'buhbuhbuh' phrases all of the time.

He still laughs extremely hard at me when I am reading to him, he wants to look at books himself and doesn't want mom around, laughs when I say his numbers, colors, letters, etc. and runs away.

So I guess I need to take a 'chill pill' as my DH says and just trust my littlest and the Lord for helping him to learn and develop his skills at the pace and rate that he chooses and not according to what I think he should be doing!!!

So excuse me when I might post about my being thrilled when my littlest says a new word or phrase!!!

I guess we all still have a lot to learn?!?

Encouraging Your Child

I guess you could call me a mom who can put on some pressure?!?

I have strongly encouraged my darling teenage son to step up to some challenges. I thought this year academically would be too easy for my son, but it has surprisingly turned out to be pretty intense. He is now practicing his alto sax about 1 to 2 hours per day in preparation for the All Region Band tryouts Dec 3. In addition to that he is active with the NHS and their activities re: the National Election. Plus he is working on his homework about 1 to 3 hours per day depending on the course.

I have been speaking with him trying to see if he might be interested in attending a prestigious christian college in Illinois? (NO) possibly applying for a military academy, you know the tuition would be free and they are the top ranked universities in the country for science and engineering majors? (NO) applying for Harvard, Yale, etc. (NO) So as you can see I am narrowing down the field of choices or directions to investigate based on my extensive questioning...

So I just had to find another opportunity for him in the field of science/engineering/math, possbily an experience that might be of benefit and allow him to narrow down his possible career/major choices and something prestigious to apply for...

This time he didn't exactly say no!!! Whoo Hoo!!! The Texas Aerospace Scholars program!!! He just said he is filling overwhelmed with keeping up with all of his coursework, classes, practices, etc and didn't see how he could add in another set of deadlines, so he was willing to try but just didn't see how...

So I asked him if he would would be willing to try if I acted as secretary. He agreed so I filled out as much of the paperwork as I could, higlighted where he needed to sign, made sure he accomplished the deadlines as outlined, got copies made, itemized his responsibilities of work to complete and broke down the steps so he didn't feel overwhelmed, one letter here, another there(letter to State senator requesting nomination, letter to Principal requesting nomination, etc.) and mailed it off. And he completed everything within the timeframe, and didn't complain, now just the waiting...

It looks like an interesting program, so check it out. Texas Aerospace Scholars Program If selected he will hear by Dec 19th, he will be assigned online work every two weeks to be completed during the year and then he will hear if he is chosen to participate in a 1 week internship at Johnson Space Center this summer, all expenses paid. The other great thing, is that if he is nominated to participate and chooses to continue with this program, there is a possibility for being an intern at Johnson Space Center during his college career!!!

Okay, I will back off and try to calm down. I am just thrilled he agreed to apply!!! I think it would be a tremendous opportunity for him and hope that he is selected, I also think it would help him to understand whether or not, he is interested in being a possible science/egineering major.

It was also interesting to my DS to see how the staff at the high school was jumping through hoops and scrambling to get his transcripts and his letter from the principal just right...An opportunity for a local high school student to be offered a position in this program, would be of importance to the entire community, just one of the items of interest in living in a small town. So he was kinda' surprised about their extreme willingness to help once they knew what it was for...a source of community pride.

The other thing my DS has said is 'no way am I going to be an astronaut and fly in space, mom!'.

I guess we will see, as far as I am concerned 'the sky is not the limit for my DS!'.

Of note, boy we have to put in alot of hours as band booster parents! Not only do we make sure that all of the band kids receive a snack at all home games, plus drink but we provide the meals and also snacks and drinks at all away games. We have raised over $2000 this year alone and that is before we cook our 15th annual Enchilada dinner the Sunday before Thanksgiving! That should bring in another $1500 after expenses. I also need to say that we don't take out any of the band funds to provide the food for the kids at their events, we have the parents contribute or cook it all as a donation. We typically feed 55 kids each game and tomorrow night we are hosting the 7th and 8th graders for the game as well. So we will be feeding over 85 kids for that game!!! Tomorrow night, I get the priviledge to work the football concession stand with some other band parents. We are able to make $250 for working the stand and this will be our second time this season. What we won't do for money! All for assisting our kids with their expenses if they make the state level for solo/ensemble (pays for Fiesta Texas entry fees, dinners and other fun events) and to offset their trip which occurs every other year. This is not our year to travel but we are full steam ahead for our fundraising efforts. They hope to travel to the Ozarks for their trip next year, now that would be fun!!!

It is a special way to provide some much needed items for children around the world and to share the gospel and plan of salvation.

Rite of Passage

It seems like the years have passed way to fast. I guess I was not prepared for this event. My darling teenage son has started the quest towards graduation...

He arrived home yesterday with the obligatory class ring info...

You might laugh, but it is true, I was unprepared and kinda' shocked.

Our son doesn't mind marching to the beat of his own drummer. So we are looking at ring vendors separate from the one offered through the high school. Shocking what rings cost nowadays. Why back in my day...

I guess I am dating myself aren't I.

At least at the moment, he chooses not to drive, he wears his shoes til they almost are falling off of his feet and he really never asks for much in the way of clothes. So we have gotten off fairly cheaply over the years.

I guess you could say, I need to get it together and get geared up for the other events left to follow. Class pictures, college applications, announcements, etc....

Where have all of the years gone?

You might be wondering what in the heck is 'Black Friday'. Well, I was educated about this great phenomena last year. Basically, Black Friday is the sales day after Thanksgiving. If you are like me, sometimes you can get some great buys for the holidays. Some of the stores like to release the info about what they plan on advertising beforehand, therefore giving customers a jump on your purchase plans. This is wonderful!!!

The sales releases are starting to roll in... Right now they have received notices from Sears and Ace Hardware about what to expect. As always, the items could change somewhat based on your region or their last minute adjustments based on their competition...Better to start planning now on what your priorities might be.

Shocked...

My teenage DS had his UIL marching competition this past Saturday. The band performed very well, but were greatly disappointed to receive a rating of 2, 3, 3.

Okay, my shock was that I looked over to see my son's new private saxophone tutor (head band person at WTAMU) sitting in the stands near us. He arrived at 3:00pm and my son's band was scheduled to perform at 3:16pm. Surely, I thought, he must know someone here in another schools band.

I couldn't believe my eyes, he promptly got up from his seat after my DS band's performance and exited the stands, I had just started over to talk with him and he was gone....

I am still in shock. He called the home this afternoon, to rearrange their private lesson date and time and said that 'yes' he had come just to see my son's band perform!!!

This is a very busy college level instructor who only took on our son about 3 weeks ago as a private student and he took the time to drive over 30 minutes one way to see him perform, in a marching performance that only lasted 8 minutes.

Can you say a big, WOW!!!

Needless to say, our son was practicing this afternoon and evening for about 3 hours on his saxophone for his lesson tomorrow, even he was impressed....

Can you say GO BUFFALOES!!!

It's amazing the ancient treasures that can be stored away in the vaults only to be discovered in the future. No really, I didn't realize that our digital camera had a built in memory, I thought all of it's memory was on the picture chips, so when I accidentally dislodged the memory chip without realizing and went to scan my recent picture loads, I was shocked to find some family photos from 2004. These are some photos of mine and my husband's family and a few of our kids, makes for some nice memories. Also, I think these might be some of our only noted pictures of our remodeled front room, drastic remodel changes took place.

As we approach this Thanksgiving season, it is nice to be reminded of your family. I am privileged to have a few photos from a rare merging of our two families in the same room. For that I am thankful for the memories.

Two Little Helpers and Good Playmates

Today was a beautiful Fall day. We just couldn't resist to get outside very early and play with the sidewalk chalk, trike, etc.

Then later before nap time, we made over 90 pumpkin shaped sugar cookies, our special treat for the High School band kids as they are traveling to a game tonight over 1 1/2 hr one way from home.

Do You Believe In Celebrating Praises?!?

My DH has a great praise report:

Today one of his co-workers told him that his advice was a tremendous blessing to her family. She had told DH that her neonate grand baby who was born at less than 1 lb and significantly premature and unlikely to survive about 5 months ago, was unable to be released from the hospital because the family had been unable to successfully transition her to feeding from a bottle. They were devastated and didn't know what to do...My DH shared that we had tremendous success with Dr. Brown's bottles and why don't they try them (all he could remember is that I was having difficulty and had tried 5 different bottle types and many more types of nipples to no avail). That was yesterday.

Today the grandmother was thrilled, her daughter went out and was able to purchase the bottles at WalMart and the baby was able to successfully bottle feed 8 oz at one time!!!

That is a praise report!!!

Timeouts Can Be Very Effective With A Toddler!!!

Today I had the opportunity to place my littlest DS in timeout on two separate occasions. It seems that the more I am using this technique the more devastated he is in when he is placed in timeout.

First, occasion, I was starting laundry and he and his new playmate were found with their hands in the bird cage trying to grab ahold of the parakeet (they have never been this bold previously, so the timeout was for 5 minutes, an eternity for a toddler) then they both had to listen to a short lecture from me

Second, throwing his dinner plate on the floor (if it is not meatloaf or meatballs, lately, then he is not happy with any other food selection and this is one way of expressing his frustration)
I and my littlest DS can use all of your prayers and support as we trudge through all of these issues....we really are in the full throws of the 'terrible two's'.
I am also trying to use the 'Five Languages of Love' and figure what is his 'love language' to try to discern which type of discipline/correction will be the most effective with my little 'mule'. Our Sunday School class bible study lately has been re: Saul and it is interesting to study how he was a 'donkey wrangler' as a young man and how that characterized the children of Israel and their desire to have him as their first king.
Just call me "Mama Saul".

Do We Put Too Much Pressure On Our Kids?

My DH and I were able to attend our son's high school open house last night. It was good to get to meet his teachers and interact with them. Unfortunately, we talked so much to each teacher we were not able to get to 3 of his classes.

What I was surprised to see:

Parents aggressively confronting teachers regarding their child's grades (i.e. Pre-Calculus)
So few parents attending the open house (for two of his classes we were the only parent to show up)
Parents expressing their displeasure with their kids academic performance to other parents in public
What my DS has said recently:
Kids eat too much junk food (my son is not perfect, but compared to others one coke per week and candy bar doesn't seem excessive, from what I understand that is the typical breakfast for his friends)
DS is shocked that kids seem to eat excessively and continuously, whenever they stop on his band trips the kids pile out to buy junk food galore (my son has always been one who eats when he is hungry and doesn't typically gorge himself, apparently my DS was almost to the point of getting sick when he saw some of what his friends were eating and how much)
People don't know how to enjoy downtime and just take it easy occasionally
People don't take the time to be with their families
People always seem to put too much pressure on themselves
People are too materialistic
Girls don't understand how to dress and presents themselves with modesty (such and such would look so much nicer if she removed her make-up and didn't dress in short dresses/some of the latest trendy clothes)
What I heard from my DS today:
One parent was at school today and approaching several of their child's teachers about their child turning in additional assignments in order to improve their grade (today is the last day of the six weeks and the grades must be turned in today)
Several kids were visibly upset that they were receiving "B's" in an advanced placement class and afraid of the repercussions from their parents
That our son is glad that he doesn't have to face this type of 'pressure' from us, he says that we have always expected him to perform his best and if he says that he has done his best then that is good enough for us, no additional pressure (but he does give us a heads up on classes that are going to be grades lower than 95, we always ask if he thinks there is something that he thinks he might need to do differently and we have an upfront discussion)
Several of his classmates are getting fewer than 3 hours sleep each night because they are overly involved in extracurricular activities and with the AP class demands they are stretched to exhaustion, they are falling out in classes and look terrible
Our son is heavily involved in band as his extracurricular activity and as he says that is enough to stretch and challenge him in addition to his class load; (some of his classmates are involved in sports, AP classes, cheerleader, 4H, etc and are expected to give 110% to everything)
What I recognize is that I have these type of tendencies. I explained to my son that I could see myself getting this overemotional on his behalf, as you can tell from some of my postings, right!!!
I guess what I am trying to say is that I keep getting affirmations everyday that I am not in control of my life or my son's no matter how much I think so...

I have been lifting up in prayer my recognition of my need to surrender and trust the Lord to direct and lead my life and my son's life each and everyday.

My writings seem to be getting more intense the closer to graduation from high school we come. My DS is scheduled to graduate May of 2010 and we have a ways to go, but it seems to be going faster than I expected. I am full of apprehension and some fear of the future, but at least in stating it, I am taking steps to pray and study the scriptures to assist me in this period of my life. I would appreciate your lifting these concerns up in prayer...

Living Far Away

Do you find that living far from your loved ones is difficult?

It seems like my DH and I are struggling more with this issue lately. We have been living in the boonies of the Texas panhandle going on 6 years and it seems like it is getting more difficult that we are not closer to parents and children. Children are over 7 1/2 hours away, my parents are 5 1/2 and my DH family is 1 1/4 hour away.

I guess it is even more of a challenge, because the gas prices keep going up and up and up. We have even been having to watch our trips to the 'big city' of Amarillo. So when we ever get an extended time off we are torn about where to spend some of our time.

We know that we are set to be here at least one more year to have our son graduate from high school, but we are not sure if the Lord wants us to consider moving after that or not. With the economic factors on the rise, it is an even greater need to start praying already.

So if you are a prayer partner, my DH and I have found it is never too early to start your prayer requests, so please join us as we seek to know the Lord's direction for our lives after May 2010.

Toddler Struggles

I guess the title should read 'Mommy's Struggles' for my littlest really isn't struggling at all.

I am finding it good that I my littlest DS has a playmate that comes over on Mondays and Fridays. He is doing pretty well with the visits. They typically hug when they meet and each loves to wave bye/bye when she leaves for the day.

I have found that our littlest one is very strong natured and it is a bit more of a challenge to get him to follow-through with obeying 'no no's. I have been using diversion and also timeouts, but we do also believe in corporal punishment so there are also pops occasionally.

I am trying to not get too hung up on feeling like I need to have him learning his 'ABC's, numbers, etc.' I am reviewing them but he just laughs and wants to do his own thing. I can't even get him to point to his mouth, nose, ears, eyes, etc. He doesn't want to do that. I guess I am also frustrated with his lack of wanting to talk, he is very at ease with using his own language and we can occasionally hear him say some words, but for the most part, it sounds like Chinese/Hungarian and he loves to talk....so there is no lack of our acquiring his language.

From what I understand, I shouldn't be hung up on his language and other skills and just allow him to play and explore all the more.

It can be difficult to adjust when you have such different personalities and interests between your children. So I am all the more having to learn to let go and trust God with my child.

Private Alto Sax Lessons

My DS was able to complete his first alto sax private lesson yesterday afternoon. It looks like he will be able to participate in the lessons each week!!! That means alot of road time, gas money and private lesson fees, but it will be worth it.

It seems like this is the busiest and most hectic year our DS has had in his high school career thus far. He is taking two dual credit classes, (having to get up to speed with online college classes and their formats), Pre Calculus, Spanish IV, Band, an independent study for Trigonometry and also Chemistry I.

He has volunteered to learn the french horn and will participate in an ensemble in order to try and make state level as an ensemble.

Mr. LeFevre stated that our son's talent with the alto sax has outgrown his current instrument. He is recommending that we look into purchasing a professional sax. So far it looks like it would be about $3500-$5000 for a decent one. Also, Mr. LeFevre stated that our DS 'will' make state band. (That is a goal that our son has expressed to us, but not to anyone else) I think that confidence from Mr. LeFevre shocked our son... Our DS stated that he guesses he doesn't demonstrate total self confidence with his playing.

Our DS is debating his recommendation for a pro sax, since he doesn't feel like he wants to make music as a career, why invest so much in a hobby? Our son is pretty practical and he's got a good point... Right now he has decided to try to take his playing and skill with this current horn as far as he can.

A good statement made by our son, 'I don't know what direction the Lord has planned for me career wise but for some reason I have been given a gift with some skills and talent for playing the saxophone so we will see what the Lord wants for me to do...." So we will take this one step at a time.

Our DS is starting to consider possible career choices/majors for college study/colleges for study and is leaning towards the sciences/engineering majors. He is considering possibly architectural engineering/architecture/petroleum engineering, etc. But he also loves to debate his high school band performances in marching and with their performing and 'knows that he could do a better job then his director'.

If nothing else, I think that expanding his skill and talent with playing the alto sax and having such a great private tutor will only serve to improve his confidence and expand his capabilities. It might also help him to decide what direction the Lord is having him go...

I must say that he plays the flute for fun, is really exceptional on the alto sax, is making a good sound with the french horn after only 4 weeks and you should hear him on the piano in the sanctuary when we are cleaning up at our church. He sounds so good on the piano and only had a couple of months of lessons when he was about 7 years old. We don't have a piano at the house, so his only time to 'tickle the ivories' is when we are at church. I know that he didn't get his musical abilities from me....In fact, he says that he knows he has inherited one trait from me, music wise, he absolutely cannot sight read, how do you like those compliments?!?

Well, we are thrilled to announce that we have a new member to our extended family. Isn't she lovely!!! Cricket is her name...do we now call her our 'Grand Dog'. I think we should....

Free Mazagines

Shhhh, keep this quiet....

I just have to tell everyone about a little secret that I am kinda' apprehensive about sharing. But it's been so much fun, that I thought you might want to get in on the action also.

I have found that this website is excellent for getting postings for really nice free magazines. What is the catch, right? No seriously, they are free and they have been wonderful, I am currently overflowing with free magazines. I love all of them, I would never in a million years subscribe to them, too expensive, but I love the beautiful pictures and the awesome articles.

I am presently getting about 8 magazines for free with no harassing phone calls, emails, subscription notices, etc.

What I have found out is that certain magazines sometimes need to boost their readership numbers and therefore for limited times they will open up prescriptions to additional members for free, no catch, no harassment and I find that I get them pretty swiftly after signing up.

What I have done is added the budget helpers blog address to my google reader as a subscription then when I see that she has posted a new free magazine, I quickly click and sign up. No more than that.

Frustrated with Teachers

Just wanting to ventilate a little...

I am very frustrated in the inability to find a private alto saxophone tutor for my DS. He is a junior in high school and is very determined to make it to the state band this year. He is very skilled and has advanced to the All Area level over the past two years, but just hasn't been able to get to that last level for state. Unfortunately, to reach the state level, it pretty well requires him to have private lessons.

I have contacted six local schools and even have called schools nearby in an adjoining state. I have also called, emailed and begged a couple of well known alto sax instructors in nearby colleges and universities.

Either no response after two to three varied methods of attempting contact or they are too swamped to take on another student.

When my DS requests something, I am always quite determined to try and make it happen and I am not able to get this latest request even off of the ground.

I guess you could say that I am angry as well as very frustrated. I have even sat down with his local high school director with no help or further suggestions for steps to be taken.

Is that all I can do????!?!???!!!!

I have to let you know about how amazing persistent prayer is...I had posted this vent blog two days ago, I have learned the useful tool of scheduling postings...in the meantime, I have received an email from the Director of Bands/Symphony at WTAMU in Canyon, Don LeFevre.
I had previously sent him an email over 6 weeks ago, called and left messages, emailed and called his secretary, etc...with no response. He is an excellent alot sax player and highly respected as an instructor, in this part of the country he is the cats meow ( too old for most of you?!?). He has agreed to take my DS on as a private student!!!! Whoop, whoop, whoop, (do a little dance!!!)
We are now in the process of working out a schedule for sessions.
Did I mention, that I know exactly who to thank for this....Praise Jesus!!!
Did I also thank and praise him even when I wasn't getting the responses that I wanted, yes...I am learning to praise him at all times, not just when I get what I want, but realising that I have handed my life over to him and allow him to be in charge of everything.
Is it easy to praise him during the bad and difficult times, previously I would have said no, but the more you realise how he works in your life each moment of each day, it is not difficult to do. It is called 'surrender', I surrender everything to him.

In light of the recent economic changes that we will probably all be facing, I have happened upon a wonderful site. It will help you identify local farms, orchards, plots where you can pick your own produce, Christmas trees, etc.

Sometimes I feel so frustrated with what is going on with our government. We are fortunate that our national representative makes quarterly visits to our townhall for public discussions, but what to do in the meantime???

I take the time to send brief email messages to the president, senators and representatives when I wish to strongly express my opinion. You should also take the time...

God's Blessings

I talk about looking for God's blessings each and everyday.

DH and I have been praying about our littlest son. He is Mr. Social and is at a critical stage in his life, where he needs interaction with other little ones. There aren't any little ones in our neighborhood for him to play with. He loves Sunday school and sees his church friends on Sunday mornings, but they typically live 30 miles away or go to daycare during the day because their moms work.

DH and I were looking for extra sources of income for a possible 'mother's day out' and let him go to a local daycare for a social day.

I picked up our local paper last week and saw an ad 'Childcare Needed for 2 1/2 year old on Fridays and Monday'. I called my DH and asked what he thought. I am not one to think about daycare (honestly, I love my own kids, but I have never been known to be the most nurturing person on a consistent basis with little ones). But this just seemed to be too perfect. The child ended up being a little girl about 32 months, potty trained and talking up a storm. Her mom was reluctant to place an ad for someone to take of her, but felt like she had no option. The grandmother who was watching her on the odd days suddenly took ill.

I have been blessed to have taken care of her for two days and can't tell you how we have been blessed. Our littlest is so happy and we can already tell. It hasn't been without challenges, he is having difficulty with trading and sharing things, but she is just as headstrong as he is, so he has met his match.

Some might not think this is a blessing, but I think it is. I have the pleasure of a sweet little girl playing with our littlest and instead of having to pay someone for overseeing his social time, we are getting paid and our son is loving it....I would say that is a triple blessing, but her parents feel a tremendous weight of relief as well. Pray that this continues to work out positively for all involved!

Good morning, I know it is not Fall yet, but the mornings are getting cooler and the shadows are getting longer... I am getting happier! I love Spring and Fall, plus being a super homebody during Winter, my DH quite the opposite, can't get enough of the brutal Summer, the more brutal the happier he is.'

I have to highly recommend this recipe for the pineapple upside down cake, it was wonderful!!!
I haven't made a pineapple upside down cake in probably 18 years, but this was easy and wonderful. I did not use an iron skillet, just my regular cake pan and followed the recipe with the following revisions. I used pineapple chunks and took the suggestion of one of the reviewers and used the pineapple juice from the can in place of some of the water needed from the cake mix directions, also picked up a pineapple supreme cake mix in place of the white from the recipe.

Let me also explain that this is a budget based on 61.67% of our gross income, 22.44 % of our gross income is absorbed with TRS/taxes/medicare/health insurance and the final 15.89% is dedicated to debt payment and tithe. We pay all our bills on the day we are paid, set aside our savings and live off the rest, so sometimes our food/auto/misc is less than the planned % is or we have an unexpected expense and this always happens and we eat off of our food stash.

We have a goal to have our home paid off in 5 years. This is realistic for us, we initially took out a 15 year note and are 4 years into our mortgage. Our goal is to establish an emergency fund of savings equivalent to 3 months gross salary and then the excess will all be put towards our mortgage payoff. Some would not agree with these priorities, but this is what we have established, there is a tremendous ease with having a house that is paid off.

Becoming More Green

DH and I are reading and looking for ways to be more "green". Isn't that the latest catch all term. Really we know that we have not done our part towards recycling, etc.

We first read and reviewed books on living off the grid, moving to a small farm and living off the land, etc. There are still books that will tell and show you how to butcher a hog, cow, etc....(DS was thoroughly grossed out....)

Yesterday we received Money magazine September 2008 and it was really helpful.

Think before you build: it's green to reuse and remodel. The house you fix up will probably be much greener than anything you build in its place, no matter how cutting edge the new design or how much recycled material you use. (Do you know that landfills are taken up more with debris from building projects than anything else.) So DH and I are happy to look at staying in our modest older ranch home and working to improve what we have. That means bye-bye to my secret desire to build a new home eventually...:(
A roof should overhang walls by at least one foot. We are blessed to be in a house where this is true. It keeps the sun off windows and exteriors which helps the house stay cool in summer. We also have our larger room with a southern exposure of windows which helps to heat our home in winter.
Size of a home does matter, don't pay for wasted space. A bedroom is for sleeping and a kitchen is for cooking. So they recommend having no more than 4 feet distance between your counters and an overall footage of 20 feet or less for a kitchen. My small kitchen fits this optimally. I guess no big expansions planned in that area.... and our bedrooms have a little spare room for the boys...
Opt for standard ceiling heights. It will save you lots of money in heating and air costs. We have standard 8 foot ceilings. Compared to new homes it seems cramped but we are adding in crown molding to visually add to the height of the rooms. Also we have a long term plan about changing the ceiling in our great room to a trayed ceiling to be more visually attractive, but that is way down on our home improvement list, but it is there...
Insulate, insulate, insulate....One of our more immediate home improvement plans is to add tons of additional attic insulation and a storm door to our front door. Our front door opens up directly to our living room, so when the cold wind is blowing and the door is opened it takes awhile to recover. We also have a longer term plan to add an enclosed small entry to our front porch area, thus minimizing the impact on the house with opening the front door. A longer term plan is to also have all of our current home windows replaced with double pane windows in the future to help minimize our energy drains. We also have an attic fan that helps pull out the hot air in our attic area in order to minimize our AC use.
Buying used and using till they are dead. Cars, that is, this is a major accomplishment in mine and my husband's thinking. What could be more green than keeping your current car and maintaining it and driving it for as long as possible. Luckily, my DH is skilled at car repair and maintenance, so this makes it more realistic as a goal. We currently have a 98' Cobra Mustang and a 2003 Explorer. These cars are really old, during our previous life we would have replaced these already...but we are determined to do good maintenance and repair and keep them as long as practical.
We will consider the energy ratings on our future appliance purchases. It is possible that we might be able to get either a rebate or tax incentive...

We are going to replace our light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs with our next payday. My DH has found that the GE bulbs are the most energy efficient and it looks like the best deal is to purchase them at SAMS club, so I am supposed to add up the lights in the house, in order to know how many to purchase.

Other actions, we need to recycle plastic/paper/glass. It is going to be a challenge, our nearest recycling units are about 40 miles away, but we need to do something...even if it takes more effort on our part. So I will look to find some large containers to store items in that will fit into our Explorer and find a place in the house or garage to store in order to stock them as needed.

Plans are to also add in a gas fireplace to our greatroom. We know that we are dependent on electricity for heating and running our home and want to establish some more sources for gas systems. We have explored changing our electric stove to a gas unit, which I prefer anyway, it shouldn't be too hard since we have a pier and beam house.

DH is also reading on steps for storage and use of rainwater.
Family is setting a priority to design and build a square foot garden system to be less dependent for our vegetables from the store.
We have considered installation of solar panels, but the expense so far is too great and the units would only be paid for after 25 years of use, so not a realistic option at this point for us.

Seems simple to read, but to commit and do as a couple takes alot of prayer, commitment and discipline.

Then DH and I established a list of goals that we have continued to review and pray specifically for... Without going into too much detail, we have been blessed abundantly since we have being praying and seeking the Lord's guidance and correction in our finances.

Our attitudes have changed significantly about how we view our blessings and what our financial goals are...This did not happen overnight and I am sure that we still have alot of areas to grow and change.

Speaking about tithe. Since I have been a stay at home mom, I took over the responsibilities of overseeing our bill paying and budget. I must admit, that I always had the goal of giving 10% of our net (that is what David and I had committed to previously) but if I believed that our expenses for the month were too much, then I would wait to pay the tithe and see what was left at the end of the month, sometimes, there wasn't anything (especially during the summer) and I was okay with that.

Since our commitment on November 12, 2007 we have been committed as a couple to give our tithe (10% of gross) first and foremost as a 'first fruit' offering to our local church. We have been able to do this unceasingly since our commitment and have also been able to contribute more in offerings to other charitable organizations and missions that we have ever done previously. Has it been easy, no, it forces you to review and rearrange your financial decisions. We have learned to live on less and amazingly we are also realizing our long term financial goals better than we did when we had a six figure income between the two of us working full-time.

When we are not agreeing on a major purchase or expense, it has also been helpful, to pull out our commitments and review them, it reminds both of us what our long term goals are. Amazingly it has gotten these purchases in order. Sometimes we have put them off, other times we have decided that we need to complete the purchase but then look for ways that we can accomplish the purchase without using credit.

Would everyone agree with our decisions, probably not, but that is what we as a couple have decided to do. Am I working with a dishwasher and washing machine that needs to be replaced because they are beyond repair, yes. We are working diligently to find the funds and are praying that they will be provided within the next couple of months, or an amazing sale/clearance comes to our attention. Have we had unexpected expenses that have set us scrambling, yes. Have we had to tap into our savings when we would have preferred to leave it alone, yes. To be quite honest for us to have a savings account to consider in all of decisions, is amazing in the least for us...

So in reference to "Staying At Home and Loving It", it takes an adjustment more than I would have expected...but the blessings are abundant.

Staying at Home and Loving It!!!

I'll be the first to admit, this is not always true...

I miss:
abdundant income
interaction with professional peers
professional challenges

I am learning to:
live within a budget
deny instant gratification of my wants and desires
cook more from scratch
look for bargains
pray more
be happier with simpler pleasures
realize that God is my holy spirit (counselor and corrector) and not other's opinions of what I should or shouldn't do
say "no" more...

I wouldn't trade:
my extra time with my family everyday
seeing my son and husband off to school
being there when they come home from school and work
having the house smell of fresh cooked bread/home cooked meal, etc
having a new little one in our family
learning to look for the little blessings received everyday
being less stressed
the abundant way that God has provided for our financial needs and the suprises that he has provided in increasing our income
feeling like I do have my priorities straight

Band Camp 2008 and the summer hecticness continues....(is that a word?!?)

Our middle DS has been attending band camp this week. This is his second year in attendance and he commutes everyday, so it puts a strain and a drain on our time and gas budget, but it is well worth it. His dad has been a huge trooper and has willingly been doing the commute daily... They leave the house at 7:30am and arrive back at 6:30pm. Yesterday was a longer day and they didn't get back home until 9:30pm.

But our son loves it!!! He is thrilled by the challenge of playing his saxophone and learns so much. He was thrilled to be selected for performing in the High School concert band and feels that he achieved a good position because he is competing against kids who have had private tutors for several years and attend 4A and 5A schools. There are 5 bands that they try out for, 1st Honors, 2nd Symphonic, 3rd Concert, 4th Burgundy, 5th White.

So my son and husband have been getting in some good bonding time together. My husband is a really big trooper because he has predominately been spending his vacation time, just being a driver for our family. Next week he will going out of town on one day for a trip to UTPB to meet with his professors in Odessa, plus one more week of band camp, I don't see how he does it?!? My DH says he is honored to be our son's chaperon and participate and contribute to something that our son loves so much....gotta love him....

The featured guest performer at the band camp this year is a world renowned saxophone player, so our son says he is being very humbled by how much more there is to accomplish in his playing...

We are determined to try once again to find a private tutor for our son. We need to find someone who he can see on a regular basis and who will challenge our son to expand his skills. Our son wants the challenge. He has missed getting placed in state band for the past two years even though he has advanced to Area both years and it is a personal goal of his to achieve state band. It is our understanding that a private instructor will make the difference in his playing level and reaching to new heights in his skills. We have been frustrated with our inability to line anyone up thus far, even after pleading with his band directors, other local band directors and the head band director at WTAMU (who is an accomplished sax player himself). But I am challenged and he wants it, so I will be on a quest...

Littlest DS and his bigger brother bonding with the birds, little one loves to park his chairs in front of the bird cages and sit and talk with them. We have a cockatiel and a parakeet, now that the baby gates are down (after this photo was taken) he spends quite abit of time nearby. I guess he has been pining to get closer to them and has been as close as the baby gates would allow previously.

Big bro and little one settled in for an afternoon of Lilo and Stitch ...(a new favorite), but we all tolerate seeing it well, at least we haven't seen this movie a hundred times through the years.

Two, Two, Two....

We have had a wonderful celebration with Elmo and Sesame Street. Our littlest DS turned two!!!
This was a major day in his life, we took down the baby gates, got rid of the diaper bag and cut his hair for the very first time....Wow overwhelming even for me!

He will now be responsible for carrying his personal items and a few toys in his Thomas backpack!!! He was a champ at strapping it on for church and wore it proudly into the nursery! My littlest is sure growing up awful fast.
His favorite meal, meatloaf and broccoli!!! It was either that or salmon patties and brown rice. Strange tastes for a little one, but hey, the kid eats dirt and loves it....
It was love from first sight!!! He found his truck in our bedroom the night before his birthday celebration, he even tried to get the truck into bed with him when he laid down for the night!!! A boy and his dump truck.
The next major milestone, is getting rid of the bottle, he only drinks his milk from a bottle and he loves to drink milk and I have not been able to change that at the moment, it truly is a test of wills and his is winning at the moment. But I took care of a little girl yesterday who is 15 months and has not had a bottle since she turned one, my DH asked if Michael was embarassed and to tell you the truth, the little girl about did a body slam on Michael to get his bottle from him so she could drink from it...

My massive haul of 10 flyers with the amazingly coveted Farmland meat coupons....my family will definitely be tired of pork products by Fall....
Realistically, it is helpful, but to coupon to this level, takes quite abit of your time. Clipping, organizing and staying on top of things. Currently, I could probably spend about 8 hours clipping and organizing. I am way behind on getting organized....
The truth is in the matter. I have taken our grocery bill/home items from over $400 per month in March down to just $140 for the month of July, and that was accomplished only through the use of coupons, smarter shopping and stockpiling.

I promised I wouldn't display all of my anger and frustration on my blog, to those in the know....

I had some very bad couponing experiences lately (CVS in OKC) and was feeling awful bummed out. But I also have had some really good experiences with couponing (Walgreens in OKC) so I guess it should all even out, right...

I found that I was becoming very obsessive with my couponing, (I tend to do that with new projects...) and I don't want to throw in the towel, so I am trying to seek some moderation with my savings.

I am working to limit my blog reading to the sites that I have found to summarize and highlight savings and I am deleting the others. I have also decided to limit my daily contests submissions to only one and then maybe none (unless they are for a new car that I like). I have also decided not to fill out every survey that comes my way, I was earning only cents on each survey and my time and patience is more valuable than that.

I am trying to become more skillful in my Walgreens couponing and store shopping, so that I don't feel so dependent on CVS for carrying my budget through for the year. I am also working to limit my coupons to those that I am interested in buying and not just everyone that comes my way. When you are trying to plan and work out 11 transactions at CVS, it takes an enormous amount of time and my family was not receiving top priority on my list of todo's....

So while I will still be developing my skills in stockpiling and maxing out my savings and shopping potential, I will not be approaching it with my typical (go for the throat, no holds barred attitude). I was taking it personally if I was not getting all that I could...get....

So a little time needs to be taken to step back and take a deep breath...

New Opportunities for Increasing Income

Just to updates matters, I got the job!!!! So I will be working to develop 3 or 4 menus to rotate for their meetings, I am thrilled, they loved my fried chicken (it did end up being very, very good, almost as good as my grandma's just not as fresh as hers ((of course she would buthcer her's that morning)), it scared me to death to make it from scratch, but I feel more confident for the future). I think the next menu selection will center around lasagna....

My husband and I enjoy the fact that I am able to stay at home full-time and feel it is significant benefit to our family and myself, so that is a priority.

We have been very blessed that I was presented with the opportunity to pick up a part-time job of cleaning our church a couple of years ago. It has been a blessing, because I am able to get the work done in the evenings after my little one has gone to sleep. The job has also been of benefit to our teenage son, because he has helped me, gets paid half of my fees and is able to save most of the money. His bank account has grown to be pretty significant and we have all learned that he is tight and doesn't like to spend his money (doesn't take after either of his parents...)

We are being presented with another opportunity for me to earn some additional income for our family. The local Lions' club has been frustrated with the inability to secure a steady meal provider for their club... and I guess my husband was bragging on my culinary abilities, so now I will be seeing about starting to cook for the local Lions' Club organization for their luncheon meeting twice a month. It is an opportunity to pick up an additional $100 per month which would take care of our grocery budget.

In reality, my husband and I have been discussing the need for our toddler boy to have opportunities for more socializing. He loves people!!! Just loves being around other kids and people, so there is a need for more playtime with other kids besides the opportunities that he receives at church. So I will cook my first meal for the Lions' tomorrow and if they like it and we can agree on about 3 or 4 meal plans, than I will be in business. I will then call a local mom who does in-home daycare and see how many days I can get for $100 per month. I am hoping that it will allow me to obtain 1 day per week, we'll see.

My DH feels that I and our little boy will be much happier campers to have a weekly break from our home routine and I think he might be right. That would allow me an opportunity for getting my major couponing or shopping, errand running, etc. done without having to worry about being so panicked, overwhelmed and frustrated with trying to get it done when my toddler boy would prefer to be at home swinging from trees and eating dirt.

So wish me luck in being able to win over the tummies of the Lions.

Summertime, summ, summ, summertime, Whoo whah...

Summer makes me happy :) except for the hot, hot, hot weather. But for the most part, I like summer.

This summer has been fast and furious. One of the unique experiences one has in the panhandle of Texas or in the midwest for the most part, is intense thunderstorms. We have been experiencing rain almost every evening for the past 5 days. It helps to cool things off and makes our farmers really happy.

You know you live in a farm community if the congregation is praying for rain!!!

But one of the downsides to thunderstorms and rain is the threat of more severe weather...

We experienced a real big storm last week. My DH and DS had to pull the mattresses into the hallway and clear everything out and we stayed there for about 1 hour while we waited for the storm to pass. There was a tornado on the ground a few miles east of town, but luckily did not stay down. But alas, my car sustained some severe damage, broken windshield, large (baseball size) hail, etc. It is now in the shop for a new roof, quarterpanels, paint, windshield and who knows what else.

We also are having our roof and the rest of the property reviewed this week, to see if we might need some roof repair/replacement, air conditioner check, etc. I am more worried about our air/heat system. It is a rooftop industrial strength Lennox unit and I would rather put in a homeowner's claim now for repair replacement than have something materialize in a few months.

But after it was all said and done, you know it is all only material things and they can be replaced or we can do without things. A threat of a tornado hitting your home makes you realize it really is all about your loved ones and their safety...so my DH and I are working to keep our minor damage and repair issues, just that.... minor...

VBS

So far, it has been a busy and full summer.
I was pleasantly surprised to end up being in charge of the arts and crafts room for our church's VBS session last week. My teenage DS was recruited as my #1 helper (token slave). Plus, I was fortunate to end up with three additional women who jumped in to help at the last minute.

My DS was gracious to decorate the room and also put in about 12 additional hours that week in the evenings, plus 4 each day.

My toddler son also had a blast and got to spend some quality time with his buddies from church.

We provided VBS for PreK-6th grade and had a different craft for each day for all age ranges. It was a hectic week, but worth all of the hours.

Just For The Asking!!!

Several of the sites that give education on starting to coupon...recommend going to your local Fast Stop shopping site and asking them what they do with the Sunday papers that are not sold and see if you can get the coupons for free...

I honestly, thought that there is no way in my local town that I would ever be able to get any significant number of coupon inserts. Surely, someone has already arranged to secure the leftovers around here and I would be just one on a long list of people desiring to obtain some great freebies.

I went to buy my local Sunday paper yesterday afternoon and was thrilled with one coupon insert in particular. The Farmland coupons were inserted once again.

$2 off of ham, $2 off of bacon and $1 off of any item. I know from a couple of weeks ago, that the hams are available at Walmart for $2.88, the bacon for $2.50 and the sausage for 1.23, so I was about to jump up and down in the store, but there is no way I could afford to buy that many papers so I stepped up to talk with the clerk and asked what they do with their unsold Sunday papers?!?

They just throw them away and no one has ever asked for the coupons!!! I kindly asked if I might be able to pick them up and she said, no problem. I went back at 10:45pm, they close at 11pm and she had already taken them out and sat them aside with my name on them. I received 8 sets of coupon inserts just for the asking!!!

Now just where to find the space to freeze the items?!?

Oh to have such a dilemma!!!

A Mini Vacation

This afternoon, I will be busy getting our household together and organized for a mini vacation. My DH is going to go to a conference in Austin Tuesday to Friday and myself and two DS will be headed in a different direction to visit with my folks from Tuesday to Friday. Plus, I am going to get my coupon binder up to speed and ready for some action if needed. I hope to score about 100 cans of Muir Tomato sauce from going to several WalMarts in the area....wish me luck...

It's a funny thing how using coupons and researching how to do the best deal can be so contagious!!!

My DH (darling husband) really wanted some new clothes for work...he asked about 4 months ago to set some money aside in our budget for him to update some items in his work wardrobe. There was a pretty good sale at JCPenney this past week, so I set a flyer on his desk and told him to think about buying some items. There were some $15 off of $75 and $10 off of $50 coupons, plus if you spend $75 on Dockers, you could send in for a gift card for $50 off of future purchases. He looked over the flyer and Friday night asked me to review once again how he was suppose to work the purchases to make the best deals.

Saturday we went to be the big city and he took off to go shopping at Home Depot and then JCPenney. He did really good with his purchases. He bought 6 pairs of pants, 4 shirts and two ties for a little over $225, (he was told his total spending limit was $400). The salesclerk helped him with the coupons, so I think he did really well. He wanted me to review his ticket and the only glitch was that he didn't spend $75 in Dockers products only $60, so on the way out of town, he went to get an additional shirt in order for us to be able to submit for a $50 GC.

He wrapped things up and said that he was behind another man whose wife had sent him back to the store to buy more Dockers because he had not bought enough also to be able to get the GC. Funny how sometimes you have to spend more money to get more?!?

Well, a wonderful shopping day for my DH and he did a really good job with getting the most for his money!!!

I have failed to mention, that our refrigerator/overhead freezer and our small chest freezer are busting at the seams. I haven't been able to buy and stock as many frozen foods/meat/milk as I would like, because I just don't have any room. This all seems to have just occurred over the past two months, since I started really working with couponing. I guess that is a dilemma that alot of folks would love to have?!?

I guess you could consider us to be bountifully blessed beyond measure:)

I spent way too much time on the computer last night... As I mentioned I didn't calculate the time that I would have to compete with my teenager for computer time. It has been so convenient to review my blogs, coupon education sites over the past two months after he left for school and before the littlest one woke up and then again during his afternoon nap time. So over the past couple of days I have lost about 3 hours of computer time a day. I stayed up well past 5 am and was back up at 7am getting my husbands breakfast and lunch ready. I am trying to steal a couple of more minutes while my littlest is playing peacefully in his bed.

I realized today that I can double my available coupons that I print from the internet. I have a laptop that I can attach to my printing cable and the coupon sites will recognize it as a different computer and allow additional printing of IP. Whoop, whoop!!! Don't know why this didn't occur to me any sooner?!?

I also just happened upon this amazing blog site. It is woman who has an annual budget of spending $800 total on groceries and personal items. Check it out... So far I have done a quick review but I am pumped. I can do that!!!

I had set a new monthly budget for June of spending $60 per week back at the end of May, but after reviewing things yesterday thought that it would be more realistic to achieve $80 per week :( But if this blog is correct and her annual budget for groceries/toiletries/eating out is $800 for a family of 4 then a weekly budget of $15.38 would work for me...I think I can, I think I can, I think I can!

I sat down and reviewed my budget goals and savings goals under our "Fearless Faith Plan" that my husband and I created in Nov of 2007 and with this latest educational info, I know I can...

I also was inspired two days ago to add in an additional goal of buying the share that my husband's friend has in his old Nova. That is about $2850. I knew that I was being directed to set this as a goal, but realistically couldn't see it happening, now I think all of our "Fearless Faith Goals" can be accomplished on or very near our original goals and also with this additional goal that was laid on my heart!!!

It truly is amazing what opportunities God will present to you when you seek to do his will... My husband and I have been overwhelmed with how much our money has been stretched since we decided to step out on faith for our finances.

I will have to post more about that later, littlest one is not tolerating his alone time anymore...

XBox 360

Whoo, hoo...Our DS (darling son) won an XBox 360 game system at his school. Apparently, they enter the students' name in a drawing if they passed their TAKS test and pull a winner's name out at the end of the year.

He was in a quandry, not sure that he wanted to keep the system because he loves his Wii. So far, I think he has decided to keep the system, we'll see.
